Can I set up an email address for outbound replies only, without forwarding?
Yes. Add the address as an alternate address and do not set up forwarding for it. Plain can reply from that address, but emails sent to it will not reach Plain.
How it works
Plain's DNS setup, DKIM and SPF, is configured at the domain level, not per address. Once your primary support address is set up, Plain can send from any address on that domain, whether or not that address forwards email to Plain.
Any emails a customer sends to the alternate address will not become threads, because there is no forwarding path into Plain.
How to set it up
- Go to Settings, then Email, and scroll to Alternate addresses.
- Add the address you want to reply from. It must share the same domain as your primary support address. If your primary is
support@company.com,noreply@company.comis valid butnoreply@company.iois not. - Do not set up a forwarding rule for that address in your email provider.
Once added, team members can choose that address in the reply composer on any thread. By default, Plain replies from the address the customer originally contacted, so switch to the alternate manually when you want replies to come from it.
You can add up to 25 alternate addresses per workspace. If customers email the reply-only address, their messages will not reach Plain. Make sure they know not to expect a response on that address.
