Why is my help center favicon blank in Google search results?

A white or blank icon in Google search results almost always means no favicon has been uploaded for your help center. Plain only adds a favicon to your help center pages when you have uploaded one. Without it, browsers and search engines fall back to their own default, which usually shows as a blank or white square.

Upload a favicon

  1. Go to Settings, then Help Center, then Appearance.
  2. Upload your favicon in the Favicon field. Upload the light mode version at minimum.
  3. Use a PNG or ICO file of at least 32×32px. For the best results across devices, use 64×64px or 180×180px.
  4. Save your changes.

The favicon appears in browser tabs as soon as you save. Google usually updates the icon in search results within 1 to 2 days, when it next crawls your help center pages.

Light and dark favicons

Plain supports separate favicon files for light and dark system preferences. If you upload only one, upload the light version. It is used as the primary favicon in page metadata and in most search engine contexts.

Still blank after uploading?

Google caches favicons aggressively. Check that the favicon shows in your browser tab when you visit your help center directly. If it does, wait up to 48 hours for Google to re-crawl and update its index. If you need it sooner, open Google Search Console, use URL Inspection and choose Request Indexing.
