Does changing an article's slug redirect the old URL?

No. When you change an article's slug, the old URL does not redirect to the new one. Help Center URLs follow the format /article/[article slug], and Plain only matches the current slug, so the old URL stops opening the article.

Keep old URLs working

Redirects can't be set up from inside Plain today. To keep an old URL working, create a 301 redirect at your DNS or CDN layer that maps the old path to /article/[new slug].

If you use Cloudflare, redirect rules only apply when the DNS record is proxied.

Things to know

  • Update any links to the article, for example in other articles, Snippets or your product, when you change a slug.

  • This applies to article slugs. If you are moving articles over from another platform, the same 301 approach covers the old paths.
