Roles & permissions
Plain offers flexible roles to help teams collaborate with the right level of access.
To manage roles, go to Settings → Members
Available roles
Owner
Full access to all settings and data.
Admin
Access to everything except billing and workspace deletion.
Support
Can message customers and use all in-app support features.
Viewer (Free)
Can view all support requests. Unlimited and completely free.
Viewers can use Sidekick by default. Workspace Admins and Owners can restrict Sidekick access to Support users and above from Sidekick → Settings.
Other members (account-less users)
Plain may automatically add people to your workspace as Other members without giving them a billable seat. This happens when someone with a matching company email domain opens a Plain thread link or participates in a connected Slack or email discussion.
Other members can take part in those specific thread conversations but cannot log in to Plain or access the workspace more broadly.
To grant an Other member full access, go to Settings → Members → Other, click their name, and assign them a role.
Custom roles
Custom roles give you more flexibility in managing access within your workspace. You can create and assign roles tailored to your team's structure. Manage in Settings → Roles → Add Role.
