What happens to messages when a user is deleted?

Nothing happens to the messages. When you delete a user from a Plain workspace, every message they sent stays on the thread timeline exactly as it was, still attributed to that user. Nothing is removed, renamed or re-attributed. This includes customer-facing replies, chat messages and internal notes, which stay visible to your team. Plain also keeps showing the deleted user by name in historical places such as timeline entries and audit trails.

The only change is thread assignment. Any threads assigned to the deleted user become unassigned. They stay in the inbox and can be reassigned to another agent.

After deleting a user

  1. Review the threads that were assigned to the deleted user. They now appear as unassigned.
  2. Reassign open threads to the right team member or queue.

You do not need to do anything to preserve message history. It is retained automatically.
